Our gymnastics programs at SGA begin with our pre-school classes
that are designed for the insruction of children ages 3 to 5 years old.
We have named this program the
Tumble Bears
. The learning
philosophy of this program is to help our students with listening and
socialization skills, while also gaining strength, coordination and self
confidence through the use of gymnastics skills and equipment that
encourage practically every type of movement the body is capable of.
Advancement from this program to the next, happens primarily by
age. We do not base our advancement from the Tumble Bears by skill
attainment. They will learn some gymnastics skills in their Tumble
Bears class but the goal of this program is to place the emphasis on the
learning gained while experiencing gymnastics rather than on the
learning of the skills themselves for the sake of skill attainment
and advancement. The age we have chosen to advance from the
Tumble Bears is 5 to 6 years and have started kindergarten.
From the Tumble Bears, our students advance to the classes we
call the Gym Kids. In this program the emphasis is placed on skill
attainment. This process is guided by our Can Do skill progression
program. This is a 5 level advancement and reward system with
rewards for many small steps of advancement. The frequency of
rewards in this program is our plan to encourage self confidence, and
to build a belief in each child that after receiving repeated awards for
advancement, that they Can Do and accomplish anything they put
their minds to. As our students advance through the Can Do program
we try to place them in class with as many students of the same or
near the same level as possible. With the size of our program and the
number of students we have at SGA we are unable to seperate our
classes soley on their level of advancement in the Can Do pogram.
With the Can Do system our instructors are able to offer
individualized work for each student to meet their needs for the level
they are at. Advancement beyond the Can Do program is possible and
is handled on an individual basis.
SGA does sponsor a competitive team program. There is no direct
path of advancement from the Gym Kids and The Can Do programs
to the competitive team system. Advancement to this program is by
invitation only, as space and coaches are limited.
