The Owners

Owners, Phil and Chris Summers, moved to Spearfish from Michigan
where they grew up and began their interest in gymnastics. Chris
through her experiences on her high school competitive team and Phil
through the competitive program at central Michigan University where
he attended college. Starting their coaching careers in Michigan gave
way to a move to Washington DC for five years of experience
coaching and running gyms in a far more advanced environment than
available in Michigan at the time. After this, lets say, training period
they returned to Michigan to purchase and run their own gym for nine
years. Even though this gym was quite successful, with six athletes
during this time receiving full scholarships at division one universities
and placing at least one gymnast at level nine or ten nationals for eight
of those nine years, after visiting Spearfish Phil and Chris made the
decision to move and bring gymnastics to the city. That was twelve
years ago and today the Summers have Spearfish Gymnastics
Academy with 150 members and a competitive team that can boast
two team State Championships plus many individual event and all
around State Champions.
