Owners, Phil and Chris Summers, moved to Spearfish from
Michigan where they both grew up and began their interest in
gymnastics. Chris through her experience in high school and Phil
through the competitive program at Central Michigan University.
Starting their coaching careers in Michigan gave way to a move to
Washington DC for 5 years of experience coaching and running gyms
in a far more advanced environment than was available in Michigan
at that time. After, this training period, they returned to Michigan to
purchase and run their own gym for 9 years. Even though the gym
was quite successful, with 6 athletes during this time earning full ride
Scholarships at Division I Universities and placing at least 1 gymnast at Level 9 and 10 Nationals for 8 consecutive years, the Summers took a
Vacation to Spearfish and made the decision to move and bring gymnastics to this great community. That was 16 years ago and today Spearfish Gymnastics Academy proudly provides a unique gymnastics experience to the city and surrounding communities. The Summers have seen 150 - 200 students come through their doors each year and now boast a competitive team with State Championships and several Regional and National level gymnasts. These gymnasts compete across the United States and have earned the right to compete at USA Gymnastics Level 9 and 10 Nationals over the last several years.
